ABOUT
Nutshell Productions is the nom de plume of award-winning documentary filmmaker Helen Hood Scheer. Helen made her directorial debut with JUMP!, a documentary feature film about competitive jump rope that follows five teams of kids as they pursue their dream of becoming rope skipping world champions. She also produced, shot, and co-wrote the project independently, and is now self-distributing DVDs. JUMP! premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival, earned special recognition at several festivals nationwide, was optioned for fictionalization, and was acquired by Showtime (broadcast almost 250 times). Previously, Helen worked as producer on two documentaries for HBO about artist Spencer Tunick, who photographs nude people in public places: Naked World (also credited as music supervisor) follows individuals and installations on all seven continents and Academy Award short-listed Positively Naked focuses on people living with HIV and AIDS. She also produced several critically-acclaimed episodes of A&E Biography, co-produced Emmy-nominated Peter Jennings Reporting: I Have a Dream for ABC, and was archival producer for Emmy and Peabody Award-winning PBS’ American Experience: Two Days in October and for series broadcast on National Geographic and Bloomberg Television. Born and raised in Venice, California, Helen graduated from U.C. Santa Cruz with a highest honors BA in American Studies and minor in History. Currently, Helen is pursuing a MFA at Stanford in Documentary Film & Video and aims to become a teacher of the form (documentary production, history, and theory) while continuing to create new content.

At Stanford, Helen has completed three short documentary films. Full-time Ministry (16mm, B&W) is about an evangelical Christian outsider artist; it premiered at the True/False Film Festival. Reborning (HD, Color) profiles an artist who makes incredibly life-like dolls; it premiered at DOC NYC. The Credible Egg (HD, Color) is about the industrialization of food and an unexpected alliance between science and nature; it premiered at the Cantor Arts Museum. Helen is now in production on Compounded (working title), a short documentary about a small-town pharmacist.
